DOT meeting Sept. 1, 2011 at Givens home Meeting called to order by president Marcia Givens after pizza dinner. DVD from AKC watched by members titled “Be a Dog Listener- dog safety tips for kids”-- membership approved showing this DVD to public at Responsible dog owner day in Glenpool on Sept. 17,11. Tips = 1. dogs are territorial- bark to protect yard or their space- do not come in or tease dog thru fence since dog will see it as threat to territory. 2. Ask owner before you try to pet any dog. 3. To pet a dog, roll hand into fist and let dog approach to sniff before patting dog under chin or on chest –don't pat top of head or ears. 3. Don't bend over dog -might startle or frighten dog. 4. if you see a loose dog, don't run away or toward dog-- walk slowly talk calmly to see if it has collar or license. 5. If loose dog comes toward you- make no eye contact and stand still like a tree with arms folded. Toss a hat or object to distract then back up or walk away. 6. Not all dogs of any breed can be labeled “mean”--individual dog behavior shows their personality -it's the deed not the breed.
